(6.15.07) Limit city's homeless plan
ASHEVILLE — City Council has asked for input on its plan for Asheville’s homeless. Here’s my suggestion: Don’t do too good a job. A wide-ranging comprehensive program could easily become a magnet for people seeking free services.

(6.14.07) Transportation Funds
WINSTON-SALEM — The General Assembly, this year, has refused to pump new money into the state’s troubled Highway Fund. And it appears likely that legislators will also place a permanent cap on the state gasoline tax. The result is less transportation money.

(6.12.07) Keeping it all transparent
CHARLOTTE — A long-running investigation into how members of the General Assembly handle money should provide some instructive lessons for those who contemplate service in public life in this state. The most recent example involves state Rep. Mary McAllister.

(6.11.07) Southport secrecy cheats public
WILMINGTON — Southport-area residents no doubt will accept a proposed reduction in the tax rate they pay to support Dosher Memorial Hospital. Too bad that neither they nor hospital officials had a fair chance to participate in the discussions.
