(7.20.07) Misuse of fund money
WINSTON-SALEM — The Clean Water Trust Fund should not underwrite new golf courses. Legislators are considering a change in the trust fund’s rules so that it can pay for “innovative efforts” like a new golf course. The trust fund is malleable.

(7.19.07) Taking on illegal drugs
ASHEVILLE — I applaud Councilman Carl Mumpower for continuing to fight the good fight against illegal drugs in the city of Asheville. He stands up for what he knows is right, even when it is unpopular, even when he is mocked in the press.

(7.18.07) Avoiding the debt trap
ASHEVILLE — In times not so long ago, survival skills were — well, survival skills. Today, that skills set has broadened, creating a new set of survival skills, as there are new pitfalls to avoid. One too many of us are blundering into is the debt trap.

(7.17.07) $1,050 fine for speeding
RALEIGH — A new system of civil penalties for severe driving infractions will raise the total bill for some offenses to as much as $3,000. In addition to existing fines and court costs, the civil penalty for going 20 mph or more over the limit will be $1,050.
