Opinions for week ending: Sunday, September 21 2008(9.19.08) LMH board seeks to secure the future of health care For years, the board of directors of Lexington Memorial Hospital has been studying the health-care landscape. With the dramatic changes in hospitals, we must be vigilant to make certain our community continues to have a modern hospital.
Last year, the board again reviewed the situation facing Lexington Memorial and found significant pressures on our hospital, with many factors beyond the control of the community.
(9.19.08) Who's paying the bills? The city of Eden does not allow alcoholic beverages on city property, and that’s understandable. But exceptions must be made to the rule, and Riverfest would have provided the premium opportunity for such an exception.
But the city leaders won’t hear of it, going as far as removing a proposal from Tuesday’s council agenda to amend the code to allow alcohol on city property. The move effectively kills any chance of opening additional “beer gardens” for this weekend’s Riverfest, which is probably the most popular and best-attended festival in Rockingham County.
(9.19.08) The last thing we need is more litigation on water Maybe Asheville’s legal team has some insight the rest of us aren’t privy to. Otherwise it’s hard to understand not advising City Council to stop squandering taxpayer money on a twice-failed lawsuit over control of city’s water system.
City Council members voted unanimously Tuesday to try to appeal their lawsuit against the state and Buncombe County to the N.C. Supreme Court after the N.C. Court of Appeals ruled 3-0 against them last month.
